Fuel Economy: Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Money

Gasoline prices are higher than ever, and the odds that they will go down anytime soon are pretty low. As a matter of fact, with an increase in demand and a dwindling supply of gasoline, there’s every reason to believe that gas prices may burn an even bigger hole in your pocket in the future. There are, however, several tips that you can follow in order to get the most out of your fuel.

The most important fuel saving tip is to drive smoothly and accelerate evenly. Smooth driving entails driving within the speed limit, preferably below 60mph. Aggressive driving will cause a dramatic increase in fuel economy. By slowing down and accelerating gently, fuel is consumed at a steady rate, whereas fast driving can waste as much as 60% fuel. Smooth driving also means that you’ll have to put on the brakes less frequently. After all, a huge chunk of gasoline is wasted whenever you hit the brakes. This simple tip can help you save as much as $0.27 to $0.89 per gallon, and can maximize your fuel economy by as much as 7 to 23%.

The condition of your tires is more involved in fuel efficiency than people think. An under-inflated tire can drastically lower the MPG by 3%, because the vehicle will have to exert more effort and burn more gas in order to keep moving. Tires lose air over time and your tire pressure may be less than ideal after a couple of months. In order to make sure that your tire pressure is in top condition, purchase a tire gauge and have the tires checked every month. However, checking the tires right after using it may cause a false reading of the tire pressure, so you’d want to check it with a tire gauge after cooling it down for a while. The proper tire pressure is usually found in the car manual or the glove box. With properly inflated tires, fuel economy can increase by 3.3%, allowing you to save gasoline by as much as $0.12 per gallon.

You might want to lay off on the plan to change your current tires into bigger or wider ones, because doing so typically adds mass to the vehicle and will hence require more fuel consumption. If you don’t need light racks on the roof of your vehicle, you might as well do without as they drag out the car. Get repairs such as auto glass replacement when your car needs one as keeping your car in top shape will help it perform efficiently. Finally, you might want to shut down the air-conditioner and feel the wind brush against you as you drive. Not only is this an excellent way to enjoy nature, it can also save a lot of fuel.
