As we approach the business end of the season, the question on everyone’s lips is who will win the playoffs?

Who will win promotion through the English League One playoffs?

England is synonymous with many things, but perhaps nothing more so than football. Whilst the English top division is among the most watched sporting leagues in the world, the second tier - known as the Championship - is in the top ten most watched sporting leagues in the world too, with around ten million people walking through Championship turnstiles each season.

So what about England’s third top division? Well, not one to disappoint, the English third tier in professional football - known as League One - is among the top twenty most attended domestic sport leagues in the world.

And a quick look down the league table reveals some pretty big clubs plying their trade in League One. Southampton, for example, has a stadium capacity of over 30,000, with its average attendance sitting at 22,000. Not bad for a third-tier club.

Also, Charlton Athletic’s stadium has a capacity of 27,000, averaging 15,000 at most home matches. Charlton also has a number of international players in its squad. And then there’s Sheffield Wednesday, who have a whopping 39,000-seater stadium drawing in an average of just under 20,000 to their home matches.

In fact, England’s League One attendances are in the same ball-park (no pun intended) as many countries’ top divisions, including the Turkish Super League and the US Major League. England, it seems, lives and breathes football.

The playoffs are arguably one of the most exciting facets of English league football. It’s a time of year when teams battle fiercely for promotion to a higher league, and take one step closer to the ultimate dream of any professional footballer in England: to play in the English Premier League.

Taking a glance at the English League One table, there’s the usual team at the top that has automatic promotion sealed with plenty of room to spare. Brighton has the league sewn-up, which leaves the second automatic promotion place up for grabs, with a mere four teams in with a realistic chance of securing the place. From the crowd, it’s perhaps Southampton that stands the best chance of nailing second position, given the club’s rich vein of form.

So which club will secure the third entry place to the English Championship via the playoffs? It’s difficult to say for sure, given that four teams can qualify for the playoffs. There’s likely to be about seven teams in contention for these four spaces, and as we’ve seen in previous seasons, with so much to play for, all teams are capable of beating each other.

It is perhaps worth having a quick look at Huddersfield though. With a stadium capacity of 24,000 and an average attendance of around 16,000, Huddersfield is one of the top clubs in League One. Coupled with the fact they have only lost nine matches over the course of the season up until the middle of April, Huddersfield could be a good bet for promotion through the playoffs. Don’t bet your house on it though, it could go any way.
