The economy shows no signs of improving, and unsurprisingly many Brits are considering a staycation. But who can blame them? When it comes to history, cultural diversity, and beautiful scenery, Britain is second to none. The East Midlands is a great place for a family holiday, and the market town of Northampton is the perfect base for exploring the region.
If you’re planning a holiday in and around Northampton, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. These are our top picks.
Northampton Museum and Art Gallery
Learn about the history of Northampton with a visit to the local museum and art gallery. The shoe collection is world famous and budding Carrie Bradshaws should be captivated by the history of shoemaking, shoes from around the world, and even some shoes owned by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. For those a little less interested in foot fashion, there are exhibits about Northampton history and archaeology.
Silverstone Autosport and Rally School
Fans of autosport won’t want to miss this one. The Silverstone Autosport and Rally School gives visitors a chance to get up close and personal with an F1 car, and get some experience of driving around an authentic racetrack. Parents of teenagers may be glad to hear that if the car becomes damaged, there is no liability on the part of the driver.
Wicksteed Park
One for families and rollercoaster enthusiasts, Wicksteed Park combines rides and attractions
Tanks a Lot When it comes to unique days out, you won’t be disappointed by a visit to Tanks a Lot. As the name suggests, this army themed day out is perfect for anyone with an interest in the British military or an interest in driving tanks and shooting at things (they won’t judge you). Some of the activities offered include driving a car over a tank, driving under water, and clay pigeon shooting. Vouchers must be bought in advance, and it’s usually booked as a group activity.
78 Derngate A visit to this unique Charles Rennie Mackintosh (the only one outside of Scotland) is sure to enthral fans of art and architecture. The house has gone through a series of restorations and is now back to its former glory. Inside you will find a shop selling unique gifts, a gallery showcasing local contemporary crafts, and a boutique dining room where you can enjoy a fancy cake and a cup of tea.
