Advantages of Regular Tile and Grout Cleaning
Daily sweeping and mopping will keep a floor somewhat clean, but it won’t take long for even the cleanest floor to start looking dingy and discolored. That is partially because both tiles and grout can be porous, particularly if they are not sealed. The pores collect dust and dirt that normal surface cleaning won’t remove. This builds up and will make the surface look dull. Additionally, if you don’t rinse your floor completely every time you clean, the detergent residue will settle in the grout lines and attract even more dirt. Once the dirt becomes imbedded in the tile and grout, you’ll typically require a professional tile and grout cleaning service to restore the new appearance of your floor.
If you happen to share your home and your tile floors with children or pets, though, there is something you may want to think about. Hands and paws will pick up traces or sometimes significant amounts of cleaning chemicals after a job is done. It almost goes without saying that whatever ends up on little hands or little paws will eventually end up in little eyes or little mouths. There are ways to professionally clean a tile floor which are safer for children and pets, and you may want to find a professional cleaner that employs these methods.

A simple DIY method of tile and grout cleaning is to use oxygen bleach. This can be very time consuming, particularly if you have a heavily discolored floor, but oxygen bleach is much safer than chlorine bleach and is easier to rinse off properly.

Some professional cleaning services offer the option of using non-toxic, non-abrasive cleaning solutions, so it’s worth asking about. Some cleaning services use little or no solution at all, and rely on industrial strength seam cleaning and extraction machines. This steam cleaning equipment can thoroughly clean and sanitize your tile and grout, removing not only dirt and stains, but also any mold and mildew which has settled below your floor surface. Yes, it is possible to rent the kind of equipment needed to steam clean your tiles, but it won’t likely be the same quality equipment used by a professional. Even the best DIY method generally won’t offer the same results.
After a thorough cleaning, you may also want to consider sealing your surface as well. This is an additional service and will usually involve additional costs, but it is usually a good investment. Your grout will always benefit from being sealed in-between cleanings, and if your tiles are the porous kind, a layer of sealant will keep them looking clean and clear even longer. It’s likely that the extra cost of sealing your surface will turn out to be a good investment, as it will extend the time in-between steam cleanings and generally keep your tiles in better shape for a longer period of time.
A tiled surface represents a significant investment, and if kept up properly will add to the value of your home. Daily maintenance and cleaning is important, and the regular use of a professional tile and grout cleaning service will keep your tiles surfaces nice to look at and safe to live with.
