Touted as the world’s first affordable, zero-emission car when it was first unveiled in 2009, the Nissan Leaf has given auto manufacturers a run for their money and car enthusiasts something to talk about since it was released in April 2011.

The Revolutionary Nissan Leaf: 100% Electric Car

The Nissan Leaf is powered by a 24kWh laminated lithium-ion battery and an electric motor. While the former can generate as much as 90kW, the latter has an 80kW capacity. There’s a 3.3 kW onboard charger, and a 120V portable trickle charging cable as well. The Leaf can run from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 8 seconds, making the model, quite obviously, a real car with a commendable performance - minus the emissions that have polluted our environment for the past years.

With the 24 kWh battery pack, all that’s required to charge the Nissan Leaf is to plug the 120V portable trickle charging cable to any standard electrical outlet. Charging will take around 7 hours, more or less, at a 220/250V and 20 hours at 110/120V. A fully charged Leaf can drive just less than 40 miles a day. There’s also a “Level 2” charger that can be mounted on any location with electricity, supplying an additional 14 miles of range per hour of charging.

Most reviews agree that the Nissan Leaf is easy and quite responsive to drive - a result of the traction control, vehicle dynamic control (VDC), and electronic brake force distribution (EBD). The electric motor produces no engine noise, although wind noise may be audible on certain occasions.

What makes the Nissan Leaf even more revolutionary is its competitive pricing. Aside from its fairly inexpensive price and the low costs of maintaining a Nissan Leaf, buyers even get federal and state incentives of up to $25,000. With these tax breaks, you can pool in more money for your routine maintenance and auto glass repair in the future.

The Nissan Leaf is more than just about quality performance - its safety and security features have also led critics to the conclusion that it’s a viable family vehicle. In fact, it was recently given the Top Safety Pick rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This award ensures front, side, and rear impact protection.

Its electronic stability control and roof strength also add to the car’s security - these impressive safety features clearly prove that there’s more to the Leaf than a dashing body style and windshield.

With the performance and innovative features of the Nissan Leaf, it’s quite clear that the era of high-performance, fully electric-powered cars has just begun. With virtually no money spent on gasoline, a lot of people can direct the savings to other car improvements or a windshield replacement.
